Paulson Press Turns Up the Speed with New Speedmaster XL 105
from Heidelberg
Paulson Press, a full-service general commercial printer
located in Elk Grove Village, Ill., recently added a six-color
Speedmaster XL 105 to its all-Heidelberg pressroom. According to
company President Ben Letto, the ultra-productive XL 105 is helping
Paulson serve its clients better and faster - critical capabilities
for a company where, "Every sheet of product that goes out the
door is a part of me," Letto says, adding, "If you don't
react quickly to your customers' needs, you get left behind."
While the Speedmaster XL 105 has been fully up and running for only
a few weeks, it has already more than doubled Paulson's throughput
of brochures, direct mail and flat envelope printing. "It's
like having a big monster to feed," Letto says, adding that
the company runs the new press at least five days a week, around
the clock to keep up with demand. Paulson also operates a pair of
40-inch Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102 perfectors, one five-color
and one two-color; a Suprasetter computer-to-plate device with
Heidelberg Saphira thermal plates; as well as three Stahlfolders
and two POLAR paper cutters. With 32 employees, the family-run
company serves a diversified clientele throughout the Chicagoland
area.
Colorado Printing Co. Takes on New Challenges with Ease with
Speedmaster SM 102
Dan Thurlow, CEO of Colorado Printing Co., is not one to back
down from a challenge. Instead of halting production on his shop's
presses while moving to a new 146,000-square-foot facility in Grand
Junction, Colo., Thurlow and partner Mike Antonucci installed
Heidelberg's eight-color Speedmaster SM 102 with perfector in his
new location to ensure continued production during the transition.
The shop's demand has increased so much that both the new SM 102
and the shop's existing ten-color Speedmaster SM 102 are currently
running at maximum speeds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"The Speedmaster SM 102 is extremely reliable," said
Antonucci. The new press with the Preset Plus Feeder and Delivery
has provided an increase in capacity - more capacity from one press
than the shop was experiencing with two older presses. Colorado
Printing Co. uses almost all Heidelberg products and equipment in
both prepress and press, including a ten-color Speedmaster SM 74
and five-color SM 74 with aqueous coater. "What makes our
partnership with Heidelberg work is a combination of good equipment
and great service," said Thurlow, who currently has more than
100 employees. Thurlow and Antonucci also use Heidelberg's
systemservice 36plus. "We are 250 miles from any big city, so
quick service is important for us," they said. Founded in
1947, Colorado Printing Co. is an all four-color commercial
printer, specializing in marketing materials and brochures for
special interest publications and real estate companies.
AJ Images Finishes Ahead with New Bindery Equipment from
Heidelberg
AJ Images, a printing, bindery, and electronic prepress
imaging center located in Roselle, N.J. has turned to Heidelberg to
upgrade its postpress equipment. After installing a POLAR 115 XT
high-speed cutter last year, the company has now added a
Stitchmaster ST 270 saddlestitcher. The new Stitchmaster has
brought increased run speed, efficiency, and versatility - all with
faster makeready times. This enables AJ Images to be more
competitive on short-run, long-run, and more complex jobs. Vice
President of Marketing and Sales Arnold Grebel reports that the
Stitchmaster ST 270's pockets are easy to set and the reject
caliber, stitcher section and trimmer work flawlessly at any speed.
The ST 270 is quieter than any of the other machines in the shop.
"We now can handle many complex stitching jobs - pocket folder
covers, douglegate folded inserts, reverse rollfolded signatures
and even single page inserts with ease," said Greebel. AJ
Images serves a wide range of customers, from high-end corporate
clients and advertising agencies, both locally and nationally, to
state government agencies. Founded in 1967 by Arnold and Janet
Greebel (president), AJ Images currently has 28 employees and is a
female-owned and family-run business.
Warneke Paper Box Company Speeds Ahead with New Speedmaster CD
102 from Heidelberg
Warneke Paper Box Company in Denver, Colo. helps its
customers stand out from the crowd with the jobs it produces on its
new Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 eight-color with coater and full
UV capabilities. According to Owner Steve Warneke, since the
installation of the Speedmaster CD 102, the shop has increased
productivity by 35 percent with quicker make-ready times and faster
run speeds. Warneke runs the Speedmaster CD 102 at full speed 50
percent of the time, depending on what kind of board is being used.
"The CD 102 has the more automated Preset Plus feeder and
delivery, and switches between different substrates quickly,"
said Warneke. The all-Heidelberg shop has relied on Heidelberg
equipment since it was founded in 1907, including its current
six-color and two-color Speedmaster CD 102 presses with coater and
six-color Speedmaster CD 74. "All Heidelbergs print
perfectly," Warneke said. "We even have an 18-year-old
Heidelberg press that still registers sharp dots." This
specialty printer's 68 employees produce packaging materials for
high-end national clients in the pharmaceutical, medical, food and
cosmetic industries. In order to produce high-quality materials,
the shop uses foil laminate, foil-type boards and foil stamping
boards along with UV and conventional inks and the automatic ink
supply system InkLine from Heidelberg.
Docuplex Expands, Moves in Speedmaster SM 52 and Printmaster QM
46-2
When Docuplex Graphics, a general commercial printer in
Wichita, Kan., moved into a new building in June, it also installed
a pair of new Heidelberg presses: a Speedmaster SM 52 five-color
perfector with aqueous coater and a two-color Printmaster QM 46.
"New building, new market, higher volume - it all came
together at the same time," says President Jay Ewy, referring
to the company's decision to add more four-color printing (direct
mail, sell sheets and booklets) to its repertoire. The company's
primary business has been high-quality, multi-color
business-to-business printing - stationery, letterheads, envelopes
and agency work - that it now produces on the new P-QM 46.
Elsewhere in its shop, Docuplex operates a Heidelberg GTO two-color
press, as well as a Stahl B-20 folder and a Stitchmaster ST 100
saddlestitcher. The company's 21 employees serve a regional
clientele in and around Wichita.
PIP Printing Steps up Productivity with QM 46-2 from
Heidelberg
Business is good and getting dramatically better, and PIP
Printing and Document Services of Ocala, Fla. aims to keep it that
way. The two-color business printer recently installed a Heidelberg
Printmaster QM 46-2 to handle an increasing volume of two-color
business and accommodate a growing number of requests for
four-color commercial work. "We needed a more productive
press," says Rich Bierema, president and owner, who explains
that his company has already run its seven-year-old QM 46-2 to 65
million impressions - and it's still going strong. In terms of
performance, Bierema expects no less from the new press, which
replaces a less productive competitive model. "I definitely
anticipate a short-term payback on my investment," he says. Of
the Heidelberg systemservice and support he receives on the new
press, says Bierema, Heidelberg technicians are unfailingly
"professional, knowledgeable, courteous and effective."
PIP Ocala runs the new press across one eight-hour shift, turning
out letterheads, business cards, envelopes, mailers and more for a
local clientele. Established in 1979, the company has six
employees.
Stahlfolder TH 82 Folder from Heidelberg "Paying for
Itself" at Hatcher Press
Hatcher Press, located in San Carlos, Calif., recently
installed a Stahlfolder TH 82 folder from Heidelberg to keep pace
with its all-Heidelberg pressroom, which includes two Speedmaster
SM 102 presses and three Speedmaster CD 102 presses. The company
purchased the folder with an automated stacker, which maximizes
capacity and improves efficiency by minimizing the time constraints
of manual loading. Since the installation, the new Stahlfolder TH
82 has enabled Hatcher Press to redistribute folding employees to
other areas of the shop. Brice Tarling, president, reports that the
new folder has reduced run times by approximately 30 to 35 percent,
noting that the Stahlfolder TH 82 is "paying for itself."
In addition, the shop has reduced outsourcing by keeping more
complex folding jobs in-house. "This folder is one of the best
bindery acquisitions we've made in a long time," says Tarling.
Hatcher Press recently added digital capabilities to its roster of
services, a milestone that was celebrated with the purchase of a
31-inch POLAR cutter. Founded in 1963, Hatcher Press is a
family-owned and operated trade printer. The company's 63 employees
serve primarily local clients, which include other print shops,
publishers, graphic designers, advertising agencies and print
brokers.
Printech Updates Pressroom with Printmaster QM 46-2
Printech, a seven million US-Dollars general commercial
printer located in Stamford, Conn., recently added a Heidelberg
Printmaster QM 46-2 to its pressroom to help the firm handle an
increase in business volume. While the company's older Quickmaster
46 press is going strong with 30 million impressions to date,
Printech needed the extra capacity to boost its output of business
cards, letterheads and other one-to-three-color printing. As a
result of the installation, says Printech Vice President Carmine
Furci, the company can turn around more jobs faster, while
continuing to deliver the quality his customers count on, whether
their jobs are produced on Printech's Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74
five-color press with coater, its MO four-color, or one of its
small-format QM 46 presses. Printech also operates a POLAR 115
cutter with air table as well as Stahlfolder B20 and B26 folders.
The company was established in the early 1990s. Its 48 employees
serve a primarily regional clientele.
New Speedmaster CD 74 Brings Growth Surprises to Spartan
Printing
Anticipating the arrival of its new eight-color
Speedmaster CD 74 perfecting press from Heidelberg, Spartan
Printing deployed extra sales representatives in early 2006 to
determine whether they could handle expanding beyond Lansing into
all of southern Michigan. According to Vice President of Business
Development Randy Root, they need not have worried. "Because
of the new equipment, we got an unexpected surprise - our
productivity is so high that it allows us to sell jobs to other
printers at a good price and still allow them to mark-up and make a
profit," said Root. Spartan Printing saw a 30 percent increase
in sales in July 2006 as compared to July 2005, and a 25 percent
increase in August after the installation of the new Speedmaster CD
74, which is the first Heidelberg long perfector to be installed in
the U.S. in this format class. Spartan Printing has been able to
reduce the number of people in its prepress department because of
their new equipment, which also includes a Prosetter 74 MCL.
Founded in 1970, Spartan Printing produces brochures, pocket
folders, direct mailings, annual reports and catalogs for clients
in the educational industry, trade associations, insurance
companies and furniture manufacturers. This all-Heidelberg shop is
family-owned and currently employs 35 workers. Spartan Printing
performs all phases of printing in-house, and with their new
Speedmaster CD 74, hopes to grow even more; possibly into the
packaging sector.
Rose Press Flexes Some Small-format Muscle with Second QM 46-2
from Heidelberg
According to the president and owner of Rose Press, Inc.,
Mt. Vernon, N.Y., the keys to business success are good management
and reliable equipment. "One makes the other better," says Pat
Mondesando. "We provide the first and Heidelberg provides the
second." The 6.5-million-dollars general commercial printer, a
Heidelberg customer since it was established in 1987, recently
installed a second Printmaster QM 46-2 to augment its small-format
capability as the business grows. As a result of the addition,
Mondesando says, his company's standard of quality for small-format
work has been "greatly magnified." With the new press in
place, he adds, "We can balance our workflow more
easily." Rose Press operates a fleet of Heidelberg presses,
including a five-color GTO, a two-color Speedmaster 74, a six-color
Speedmaster 74 DI and others. The company runs both of its QM 46-2
presses "aggressively" during a single extended shift and
relies on word-of-mouth to promote its capabilities. "Our
reputation drives it," Mondesando says, "and part of that
reputation is our Heidelberg equipment." Elsewhere in the
plant, the company operates a pair of POLAR cutters and four
Stahlfolders. It also uses Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 DI plates and
Heidelberg blankets for all of its presses. With 30 employees, Rose
Press serves the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state
area.
