Kennesaw, Ga.,
- Heidelberg USA announces the following new product
installations:
Digital Ink, Inc. Stocks New Building with Host of Heidelberg
Equipment
When David McGinnis, founder of Digital Ink, Inc.,
decided to move his business into an expanded building more than
five times larger than its current location, he knew that big
changes lay ahead for his company. Instead of going through the
hassle of moving equipment across town and setting up in a new
location, McGinnis decided to sell everything and start fresh with
a suite of new equipment - prepress, postpress and everything
in between - from Heidelberg. Freshly installed at Digital
Ink's new location are Heidelberg's Prinect Printready prepress
system with Prinect CP2000 Center, Suprasetter A74 and Suprasetter
MCL 74 platesetters, 6-color Speedmaster CD 74 with aqueous coater,
POLAR 115 X cutter, Stahlfolder B 30 folder, and Stitchmaster ST 90
saddlestitcher. "We had Heidelberg equipment already, but this
upgrade allows us to start fresh with added capacity for our
clients' work," McGinnis said. "The Speedmaster CD 74
press, which replaced an earlier model Speedmaster, already has
more than 11 million impressions since it was installed this
summer." Digital Ink, Inc. runs the press, which is an
F-format - 60.5 x 74 centimeter (23.82 x 29.13 inch), at its full
speed of 15,000 sheets per hour "24/7." McGinnis started
Digital Ink more than seven years ago in Richmond, Va. The company
serves high-end commercial print needs for customers along the east
coast and handles political print work from around the country.
Shorewood Packaging Indianapolis Installs Speedmaster XL 105
Board packaging specialist Shorewood Packaging, Indianapolis,
Ind., recently installed an ultra-high-performance Heidelberg
Speedmaster
XL 105 with Image Control, Instant Gate and DryStar Advanced.
The new press, which is the Indianapolis plant's first Heidelberg,
replaces an older packaging press whose running speed topped out at
9,000 sheets per hour and required three hours to makeready.
Shorewood recently completed training on the Speedmaster XL 105,
and is steadily adjusting to the pace set by the new press. The
company already has run a number of live jobs at speeds to 17,000
sheers per hour on the Speedmaster XL 105, and is ramping up to the
Speedmaster XL's full speed of 18,000 sheets per hour. Says Ken
Reddick, Vice President of Litho Technology, "I've been in the
printing and packaging business for 40 years, and I've stayed
closer to this press on startup than any other. Because we are
still in learning mode, we haven't yet experienced the full benefit
of the new press, but we're excited by what we've seen so
far." For example, "Our makereadies are down to one hour,
and there's no discernable vibration, even at 18,000 sph." In
fact, Reddick notes, "the faster the press goes, the more
relaxed we can be. The press does all the work. It's been a great
experience." Established 35 years ago and currently with 340
employees, Shorewood's Indianapolis operation specializes in
cosmetics, sports and pharmaceutical packaging. While the new
Speedamster
XL 105 is a first for the Indianapolis plant, Shorewood
Packaging boasts no fewer than 23 Heidelberg presses across the
corporate enterprise, including another new Speedmaster XL 105 at
its Hendersonville, N.C. facility. Both of the new Speedmaster XL
105 presses are prepped for UV technology.
Crystal Clear Images Rolls Out New Prepress Workflow System from
Heidelberg
What began as a small operation out of a Detroit basement
in 1995 has quickly grown to become a versatile, established print
shop known as Crystal Clear Images. Owner Crystal Mitchell began
her career as a school teacher in graphic design after completing a
college degree in communications. Soon she started her own
communications and media company, and grew a loyal customer base
with her talent for creating business cards, menus, and a host of
other materials for friends and acquaintances. "Four years
later, requests for four-color work had become too constant to
ignore," Mitchell said. "We decided to invest in a
Heidelberg GTO press because I wanted to make sure we had the best
equipment possible to develop Crystal Clear Images." The
husband and wife team - Crystal with her husband
Anthony - are "the brains and the brawn of the
business." After purchasing the company's first building in
2000 and continuing to expand its portfolio of offerings, Mitchell
recently decided to invest in Heidelberg's Prinect Printready
prepress system and Suprasetter A52 platesetter to meet the demands
of customers who are accustomed to the same-day service that
Crystal Clear Images provides. "When people heard that we were
installing Heidelberg's Suprasetter A52 and Prinect system, the
amount of business influx was incredible," Mitchell said. The
company creates banners, menus, business cards, UV-coated
billboards and a variety of business materials for its clients. It
is a union print shop, often printing for the city of Detroit, the
county and various political candidates. The company recently went
live with a new e-commerce site, Crystalclearimages.com, where it
will specialize in producing quality full-color printing and UV
coating for clients nationwide at affordable prices. In the next
three years, Mitchell hopes to expand into a 20,000-square foot
building to continue growing the business. "We will continue
to look to Heidelberg for our equipment because of the name and
reputation of the equipment," Mitchell said. "It is true
that Heidelberg is the Rolls Royce of printing." With a team
of eight employees and Heidelberg Sales Representative Curtis
Leszczynski, Mitchell looks forward to continuing success with
Heidelberg.
Associated Printing Adds Heidelberg Printmaster PM 52 and
Matching Platesetter
Associated Printing Company, Inc., a general commercial
printer in Covington, Ga., recently marked its switch to a CtP
workflow by replacing an aging two-color press with a Heidelberg
Printmaster PM 52 four-color press and installing a Prosetter P52
platesetter to match - the company's first experience with
Heidelberg. Previously, says company President Chuck Hill, "We were
doing some four-color work by making two passes through the press,
or we outsourced it. Not only was it a time-consuming and laborious
process, but we also were getting killed on price. We're as much as
100 percent more productive with the new PM 52 - so much so
that we now can help out a lot of smaller shops in the area that
don't have these capabilities." What does he like best
about the new press? "It's a Cadillac," says Hill, citing
throughput, quality and flexibility. "We now run as much in
one day as we used to run in a week. Autoplate automated
plate mounting is a blessing. It's easy and the press is fast to
come up to color. This press can handle anything and everything we
throw at it, making us more competitive and less price-sensitive.
We're making more money on the jobs we handle than we used
to." To perfectly complement the Prosetter P52, Associated
Printing also purchased Heidelberg Saphira Violet plates. The
Saphira violet plate is a high resolution plate and has the fastest
press rollup of any CtP plate on the market. Heidelberg Consumables
are in use throughout the shop, Hill says. Established in 1985 and
with nine employees, Associated Printing provides commercially
printed products to a primarily local clientele.
Heidelberg Stitchmaster ST 350 Accelerates Bindery at
Castlereagh Press
A prominent Long Island commercial printer, Castlereagh
Press of Freeport, N.Y. recently invested in Heidelberg's
Stitchmaster ST 350 saddlestitcher to uphold its long-standing
reputation for excellence. Company President John Sabatino points
to the features on the Stitchmaster ST 350, such as the central
graphical touchscreen and saddle chain synchronization, as a
tipping point when choosing this newest addition to the bindery.
"We have already experienced improved efficiency, which helps
us keep most of our work in-house," Sabatino said.
"Castlereagh prides itself on keeping up with the demands and
deadlines of its customers, and the Stitchmaster
ST 350 increases the efficiency of our entire shop." The
shop services advertising agencies, publishers, design studios,
large corporations and small businesses - offering general
commercial print work and delivering on a variety of client
demands. The ST 350 runs across two shifts at its full speed of
12,000 cycles per hour most of the time, resulting in quick
turn-around times in Castlereagh's bindery. With more than 60 years
in the industry, Castlereagh and its 69 employees continue to lead
the pack in efficiency with equipment from Heidelberg.
Park Printing House, Ltd Expands Production with Speedmaster CD
74 from Heidelberg
Greg Bass, President of Park Printing House, Ltd. in
Verona, Wis., recently cut down on pressroom headaches and
complications by installing a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 press.
The six-color press is now settled in, running beside a twin
Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 press. The new press already has more
than four million impressions since its installation in August,
when it replaced an older Heidelberg press. "We've always used
Heidelberg presses, so I expect high quality results," said
Bass. "Being able to put the same plate on either Speedmaster
CD 74 press helps us stay consistent with our scheduling, as jobs
that come in with short turn-around times can now be produced on
either press. We don't have to wait for a specific press to become
available, and we have consistent results." The Speedmaster CD
74 was installed with Heidelberg's systemservice™ 36plus
service package, which covers three years of repair services and
parts and offers 24/7 access to Heidelberg service professionals.
Exceptional service is important for Park Printing House, which is
in the midst of expanding its services and its space. The company
currently handles corporate general commercial work, with regional
customers in the manufacturing, retail and advertising industries.
Park Printing House was founded in 1952, and currently houses 60
employees.
A New Press, New Outlook for Heritage Printing Service
Heritage Printing Service recently replaced three aging
presses with a new 6-color Speedmaster CD 74 with perfector and
aqueous coater from Heidelberg. Output on the new press is faster
than the three older presses combined, according to company
President Bill Miles. "We are an all-Heidelberg shop, and
decided to replace our two-color, five-color, and SORM presses with
some of the latest technology that Heidelberg has to offer in
sheetfed printing," Miles said. Heritage Printing had lost
some work in the past because it could only handle 14 x
20-inch work. Now that word has gotten out about the new press
installation, clients are flocking to Heritage for its quality
output and capacity. The company installed an F-format press, which
has the capacity to print up to sheet sizes of 23.8 x 29.2
inches, and has a maximum print speed of 15,000 sheets per hour.
The added perfecting device allows complete flexibility on a wide
range of printing stock, so Heritage Printing now has no reason to
turn clients away. The press, which has been in use since late
summer, runs alongside a Speedmaster SM 52 press creating
brochures, advertising collateral and general commercial work for
clients in the Richmond, Va. area. Heritage Printing Service was
founded by Miles' grandfather in 1946, and has been in the family
throughout its existence. "I don't think I would trust
anything but a Heidelberg," Miles said. The company still runs
two Heidelberg Windmill presses, one of which is more than 50 years
old. Heritage Printing Service currently employs 15 at its
Richmond, Va. site.
Ultra Imaging Trades Up to Fully Automated Printmaster PM 74
Perfector
Ultra Imaging, an AlphaGraphics franchise located in
Billings, Mont., reported a 30 percent increase in print volume for
October, thanks to the installation of a Heidelberg Printmaster PM
74 4-color perfector earlier this fall. The new press, which
replaces an older two-color machine, is used for general commercial
work, including book work, advertising and marketing materials, as
well as producing high-end reports for nonprofit groups. Company
President Keith Hermanson lauds the Printmaster PM 74 perfector for
its overall quality enhancements and faster setup, due to
automation. "The press is just so predictable," he says.
"We can dial in much more accurately than before." A
Heidelberg customer for 10 of its 12 years in business, Ultra
Imaging handles small-format work with the aid of a pair of
Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46 presses, anchors its prepress workflow
with a Prosetter P74 platesetter with Meta Dimension RIP, and uses
Heidelberg Consumables throughout the shop. A Stahlfolder folder
and a 40-inch POLAR paper cutter facilitate bindery work. With
26 employees, Ultra Imaging serves a predominantly local clientele
in and around Billings.
Back Gauge in Motion: Blue Ocean Press Installs Second POLAR 115
XT Autotrim
Blue Ocean Press, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., recently replaced
an aging paper cutter with a fully automated, programmable POLAR
115 XT with Autotrim, Transomat offloader and Dorner conveyor to
streamline its postpress operations. The new machine joins an
existing POLAR 115 cutter in the company's full-service bindery.
Company President Tom Mounce measures the return on his investment
in time savings and ease of use. "The operator now works fewer
hours with less assistance, due to the automated material handling
features of the new cutter." Mounce also praises the variable
speed back gauge, which can be sped up or slowed down, depending on
the requirements of the job. "Flexibility like that means we
can handle a wider range of stocks at higher speeds," he says.
Established in 1982 and with 36 employees, Blue Ocean Press
provides high-quality commercially printed products to customers
throughout South Florida. The company also operates three
Stahlfolder folders.
