Company Experiences Upgrades in Quality, Service and Eco-friendly Printing

KENNESAW, Ga. - Heidelberg USA today announced the successful installation of new prepress, sheetfed press and postpress equipment at Seaway Printing of Green Bay, Wis. Since November 2007, the company has added a new Speedmaster XL 105 press, a Suprasetter SCL 105 platesetter and a Eurobind 1300 perfect binder to its all-Heidelberg assembly.

The four-color Speedmaster XL 105 press with aqueous coater marks Seaway Printing's entry into the 40-inch market and confirms the company's aggressive growth plan for 2008. "The Speedmaster XL 105 has performed above our expectations in both quality and speed," Seaway's President Kevin Heslin said. Going from a half-size shop to a 40-inch shop with the newest technology available has attracted potential new customers to Seaway due to its advancements in turnaround time and quality.

The company also is taking advantage of Heidelberg's service. "What really sets us apart from our competition, besides being the only shop north of Milwaukee with the technology of a Speedmaster XL 105, is Heidelberg's phenomenal systemservice 36plus offering. For example, during a third-shift run, a Heidelberg service representative called us from Germany because he could see a small problem, and instead of waiting for someone to come service the press, it was corrected remotely with almost no downtime. The technology is absolutely amazing."

One reason that the company chose Heidelberg's Speedmaster XL 105 is its alignment with Seaway's dedication to environmentally-friendly printing. Improvements in chemistry consumption, power conservation and waste reduction are just a few of the advantages that Seaway has already experienced with the new press. Seaway's Speedmaster XL 105 also is equipped with Prinect Inpress Control, an inline color measurement device that measures color and register on the fly while the press is running, even at full operating speeds. "The efficient make-readies and high run speeds of the XL allows Seaway to be competitive across a wide range of products," Vice President of Sales John Hawk said. "These features enhance our efficiency producing both short-run color books and long run direct mail components."

Some other features of the Speedmaster XL 105 include:

  • Real production speed of 18,000 sheets per hour
  • Automated inking, blanket and impression cylinder washup
  • Prinect CP2000 Center, a single touch-screen control of all press functions
  • Preset Plus Feeder and Delivery for improved sheet travel
  • Autoplate Advanced for accurate plate-changing
  • Hycolor integrated inking and dampening for superior quality at highest speeds
  • Precise, reliable sheet travel
  • DryStar 3000 Dryer with patented round jet array for maximum dryer output
  • Specially designed Preset Plus Delivery for long runs
Heidelberg's Suprasetter Single Cassette Loader (SCL) 105, which was installed at Seaway in preparation for the new press, is the company's first automated platesetter and CtP system. Because of the advanced plate handling technology and automation of the platesetter, which is used in combination with Heidelberg Saphira plates, plates are ready in less time with less labor.

While all areas of the print shop must work together seamlessly to create beautifully printed work, the bindery is especially important for Seaway Printing, which produces mostly books, publications and newsletters for its regional clients - many of whom are publishers. "We do so much perfect binding and saddlestitching, so we upgraded and replaced an old binder with the Eurobind 1300 from Heidelberg," Heslin said. The professional four-clamp perfect binder for manual feeding of book blocks is equipped with a belt delivery and a four-station pile delivery for perfect-bound products. Though the binder has only been installed in the shop a short time, the Heslins are expecting overall enhanced performance with the automated functions of the Eurobind 1300.

"We chose the Eurobind 1300 for its efficiency. Printed materials were coming off the XL 105 press much faster than with our previous press, and our binder needed to match that efficiency," Heslin said. "Setup is so quick and easy on the Eurobind 1300 that we lose no time in getting our products finished and out the door."

Seaway Printing employs 47 and is a full-service printer for associations, manufacturers and publishers locally and regionally out of Green Bay, Wis.
