North Star Printing, a commercial printer in Spanish Fork, Utah, last month installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 5-color press with aqueous coater and Axis Control color measuring system to take advantage of its numerous Prinect modules. The company is one of the most highly Prinected print shops in the nation, having installed every Prinect module from Prinance MIS to Prepress Manager workflow to web-based customer interface via Direct Access. The result? "Holy cow!" exclaims Neal Foster, the company's owner, not sure where to begin singing the praises of the new press. "We just enter a job from Prepress Manager and it's off to the races. Everything is preset: run length, job size, ink keys - you name it. Makeready takes just five minutes, compared with 35 minutes on our older press, and we're averaging just 175 sheets to come up to color, thanks to Axis Control, which also enabled us to verify with the G7 color standard in just two days. The press is hungry, too. We're running 15,000 sph on all kinds of substrates. Where we used to run five or six jobs per shift, we now can handle 10 to 12. We have not found a difficult job yet. We've more than doubled our productivity. It's just crazy what this press can do in conjunction with Heidelberg Prinect products."

Other Heidelberg equipment in use at North Star includes a Speedmaster SM 74 8-color press, Prosetter 74 SCL, Stahl ST 270 saddlestitcher, and a POLAR 92 X programmable paper cutter. The company also uses Heidelberg Saphira violet plates, as well as Saphira Perfect Dot Blankets, ink foils, fountain solution and press wash.

In business for 14 years and with a staff of 24, North Star serves a client base in Salt Lake City and its surrounding areas. Since it began using Heidelberg's Prinect Direct Access customer portal just 12 months ago, however, the company also has experienced a 20 percent growth in its internet-based business.

Big Changes Unfold at Steward Printing

Steward Printing and Advertising in Dallas, Texas, replaced its 20x29" Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 with a 23x29" Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 5-color Perfector with coating unit last year, then followed up by adding a full-size 30x40" Stahl B30 folder (equipped with high-quality scoring attachment), cousin to the Stahl B20 small-format (20x33") folder already in use at Steward.

According to owner Kevin Steward, "The Speedmaster CD 74 bumped us up enough that we also needed a larger-format folder. Just as the new press has enabled us to enter the packaging area, the new folder means we now can offer our customers a variety of folding options we had previously outsourced, including a fast fold 16-page, 12-page landscape format, and 3-panel scoring. The quick and easy set up of the continuous feeder, right angle and delivery has increased our production time on all of the jobs that we have put on the folder. Having these capabilities in our own shop saves both time and money, in addition to giving us greater control over the finished product," Steward said.

Other Heidelberg equipment in use at Stewart Printing includes a 115ED 45" & 76 EM 30" POLAR paper cutters and a Stitchmaster ST 90 6-pocket saddlestitcher with cover feeder. The commercial offset printer also uses various Heidelberg consumables with the new Speedmaster CD 74 press. The company serves a local clientele.

Established in 1983 and with 11 employees, Steward Printing has enjoyed a long relationship with Heidelberg. "We've learned over time that you get what you pay for," Steward says. "Not only is Heidelberg equipment durable and reliable, but the company has always provided us with terrific service. Heidelberg is definitely a staunch supporter of the small business printer."

Rick's Printing Credits New Speedmaster CD 74 with Record Growth

According to Rick Jacobs, taking the first step into mid-sized offset printing has been "better than I ever imagined." The owners of Rick's Printing in Portland, Ore. installed a new 4-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 press late last year, and have been singing praises of the new press ever since. "We now can compete with most of the 40-inch presses in our market and deliver better quality results at a lower cost than most of our competition," Jacobs said.

With automated makeready and user-friendly operation, the Speedmaster CD 74 is a perfect complement to the pressroom at Rick's Printing. The "unbelievably productive" half-size press has been running nearly 12 hours a day, six days a week, producing high-quality trade and commercial work. "We've been buried in work on the new press," Jacobs said. "Since the installation of the CD 74, we are able to take some of the pressure off of our existing Printmaster PM 52 press and be more strategic with our production methods." An all-Heidelberg shop, Rick's Printing also operates a Printmaster QM 46 press along with the Printmaster 52 and the CD 74 presses. All three presses are supported by a Heidelberg Prosetter 74 violet platesetter, which was installed last year to supplement the company's existing Heidelberg Quicksetter. The Prosetter uses Heidelberg Saphira violet plates, while the Quicksetter feeds on Heidelberg Cristala polyplates. Rick's bindery also houses a 78ED programmable POLAR paper cutter.

With just seven employees, Rick's Printing has developed a solid reputation and a loyal client base in and around Portland. "When my wife Keri and I started this company with just the QM 46 press and one POLAR cutter from Heidelberg, we never imagined the growth we've experienced in just seven years," Jacobs said. The truth is in the results - Rick's Printing has experienced month after month of record growth. "We will continue our aggressive growth strategy using Heidelberg equipment."

Oliver Printing Supercharges Throughput with POLAR 137 XT Cutting System

Based out of Twinsburg, Ohio, Oliver Printing has realized a 30-40 percent increase in cutting productivity since it installed a POLAR P.A.C.E. 137XT with Autotrim automatic waste removal late last year. Said company president George Oliver, "Not only have we saved production hours because our throughput is higher, but our operators also love the automated, ergonomic material handling features of the new system. Cutting bottlenecks are now a thing of the past."

Heidelberg hardware and software are well integrated into Oliver Printing's operation to take full advantage of Heidelberg's legendary quality, reliability and productivity, Oliver added. The company operates a Suprasetter 105 CtP device with Printready prepress workflow, in addition to several Heidelberg presses in every format size: a Speedmaster CD 102 6-color press, a Speedmaster CD 74 6-color press, and a Printmaster QM 46 2-color press. In addition to the new POLAR 137 XT cutting system, which also includes a stacklift, jogger, cutting table, left turning gripper and Transomat unloader, Oliver's bindery also houses a Stitchmaster ST 100 saddlestitcher, Stahlfolder TH and Stahlfolder B26 folders, and a POLAR Cutting System 2. New Suprasetter Eases CtP Learning Curve for Florida Packaging House

Since Florida Packaging & Graphics installed a Heidelberg Suprasetter A105 with Prinect prepress workflow late last year, the company has been enjoying better and more consistent print quality, as well as a marked reduction in makeready times. "We're also saving money in terms of reduced paper for makereadies, film costs and the costs associated with film outsourcing," said John Long, president of the Pompano Beach, Fla.-based company. "The Suprasetter definitely does what we expected it to do; still, we were pleasantly surprised by the extent to which we have been able to shrink our makeready times. Even at this early stage in our CtP implementation, we're already at least 50 percent faster, and we expect to improve on that as we become more comfortable with the workflow." The company relies on Heidelberg Saphira Chem-free aluminum plates for fast rollup and consistency. It also installed an HP plotter for proofing with Heidelberg Prinect color management software on board.

In business for more than 30 years, the family-owned paperboard packaging specialist manufactures boxes for foodstuffs, medical equipment, automobile parts, and health and beauty products, in addition to point-of-purchase and counter-top displays. It serves a loyal client base located along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard and throughout the Southwest and Caribbean. The company employs a staff of 18.

In moving to a computer-to-plate workflow, Florida Packaging & Graphics chose Heidelberg technology largely because "the overall value package was better," Long said. Installation and implementation proceeded smoothly, and an invitation to visit Heidelberg's Print Media Demonstration Center in Kennesaw proved to be "a great learning experience." In addition, he noted, Heidelberg training personnel were very good at easing the company into the CtP learning curve.

Fineline Printing Creates More Capacity with New Speedmaster CD 102

Fineline Printing, a 27-year-od commercial printer located in Indianapolis, Ind. was already running its Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 6-color perfector around the clock when the company took delivery of a new Speedmaster CD 102 5-color press with coater, Preset Plus delivery and Peak Performance Package last year. With the addition of the new, larger-format press, the company not only has freed up a lot of the Speedmaster CD 74's capacity, but now has the flexibility to do more multiple-ups at faster speeds and with shorter turnaround times, the better to handle the wide variety of projects from brochures to annual reports to folding cartons.

"We achieve faster makereadies, faster running speeds and greater all-around productivity with the Speedmaster CD 102," said pressroom manager Roy Keen. "In essence, we've picked up another shift since installing the new press." Keen specifically credits the redesigned Preset Plus delivery on the CD 102 with providing better sheet control, thereby enhancing the speed and consistency with which it prints. Fineline also uses Heidelberg Saphira rollers, ink foils and Perfect Dot Blankets to enhance the performance of its new press. In addition to its existing Speedmaster SM 74 perfector and new CD 102, Fineline operates a 5-color Speedmaster SM 52 perfector, a 2-color MOZ perfector and three Printmaster QM 46 2-color presses, as well as a Heidelberg Windmill letterpress and a Heidelberg flatbed die cutter. The company's bindery houses three programmable POLAR paper cutters and no fewer than five Stahlfolders in various format sizes. "We keep buying Heidelberg because of the quality built into every machine," Keen said. "The fact that our customers seem to care about that is reason enough for us to keep buying Heidelberg."

Minority-owned Fineline Printing serves a national base made up of industrial, pharmaceutical, governmental and ad agency clients, and was the first commercial offset printer in Indiana to be recognized by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership. The company employs a staff of 60.

Boneck Printing Stays Competitive with Speedmaster SM 52

Boneck Printing, Sheboygan, Wis. makes the most of its smaller size by staying nimble and accessible, and by utilizing the highest quality, most versatile equipment available. The longtime Heidelberg customer, which has both the Heidelberg Prinect Prinance MIS and Prinect Printready prepress workflow, recently installed a Speedmaster SM 52 6-color press in an effort to compete on smaller-run jobs it had been losing to digital print.

Said company president Tom Behrens, "We're now competitive with short-run digital on offset. We've cut our makeready times on the Speedmaster SM 52 by 50 percent thanks to our decision to go with Prinect Axis Control color measurement and control system. Sending prepress information directly to both the new press and our existing 6-color Speedmaster SM 74 via our Prinect Printready workflow has also proven to be a tremendous time saver." Elsewhere in the shop, Boneck operates a Heidelberg Suprasetter 52 platesetter, a Heidelberg 72ZP 2-color perfector, a Heidelberg TOK press, and a Printmaster QM 46-2, in addition to a pair of Stahl B 26 folder and B 20 folders and a POLAR ECM automated cutter. The company uses several different Heidelberg Saphira consumables including inks, press wash and Saphira Chem-free plates.

Established in 1962 and with 14 employees, Boneck handles a variety of commercially printed products from envelopes and letterheads to Styrene and POP displays printed with special, quick-drying inks for customers in 36 states. "What people like about us is that we are small enough that they can talk directly to the individuals responsible for their work. What we like about Heidelberg has everything to do with the fantastic quality and dependability of its hardware and software."

The race is to the swift. Check out the Speedmaster SM 52 .
